Interview with Dr. Donald Luidens
Dr. Donald Luidens. Luidens is Professor Emeritus of Sociology and a Hope College alumnus (1969). He joined the faculty of the Hope College Sociology Department in 1977. Halla Maas and Olivia Brickley interviewed him with the purpose of gaining a firsthand account of the socio-political atmosphere of Hope College through the eyes of a student. Luidens discusses the the tensions among students, faculty, and the Holland Community in reaction to the Vietnam War. He also talks about how the Civil Rights Movement and the emergence of the feminist movement impacted Hope students. The details of this interview gave not only a firsthand account, but also gave perspective to the various other sources used throughout this project. Furthermore, Luidens’ stories made a potent statement about civil liberties and social justice.
